BIB209E - New Testament Survey (2 credits) 9326

COURSE DESCRIPTION
A survey of the entire New Testament, including the life of Christ, the establishment of the Church, the life and letters of Paul and the remaining letters of the New Testament.

REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS
Since this course surveys the New Testament (NT), obviously our fundamental text is going to be the New Testament itself. If you are not already quite familiar with the New Testament, I strongly recommend you read the Scripture passages designated in the chapter(s) to be studied for that lesson. In addition to the NT itself the following text is required:

• Robert H. Gundry, A Survey of the New Testament, 4th ed. (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2003)
The following are supplemental texts that are recommended:
• H. H. Halley, Bible Handbook, 24th ed. (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1965)
• H. Wayne House, Chronological and Background Charts of the New Testament (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1978)

We will use Gundry as our main guide. In surveying the New Testament we are not merely concerned with restating what is found there, but with seeking to understand the role and purpose of the book studied both in its own right and in relation to the broader New Testament canon. This inevitably calls for some measure of interpretive skill that will enable the message of the book to be accurately identified. For this reason special attention should be given to those parts in the chapter in Gundry which deals with the purpose, message, theme, as well as content of each book being studied. Since each book of the New Testament was written within a definite historical, political, and social context, it is important to have a sense of these prevailing conditions. The first six chapters of Gundry will help us here. Halley's Handbook provides an overview of the contents of each New Testament book and would serve as a useful supplement to the reading of the New Testament itself. Finally, Wayne House's Charts is packed with helpful information about the New Testament summarized in diagrammatic or chart form.
