COURSE DESCRIPTION
An analytical study of the content of the fourth gospel, with special emphasis
on the distinctive elements of John's message.
LEARNING RESULTS
• That the student learn the meaning and purpose of John's Gospel through
careful study of the text of John itself and through interaction with the premiere
secondary commentaries, books, and scholarly articles which attempt to interpret
John.
• That the student gain an understanding of the relationship of the Gospel
of John to the Synoptic Gospels and to the rest of the New Testament.
• That the student comprehend the challenge of John's Gospel for the people
of our world today.
• That, as Christians, the students who complete this course gain a deeper
understanding of the Christian faith and grow closer to God in the process.
REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS
1. A literal (formal equivalent) translation of the Gospel of John (or something
close to literal): The New International Version; The New American Standard
Bible; The New King James Version; The Revised Standard Version; The New English
Bible; (The New Living Bible is also acceptable).
2. Don A. Carson, The Gospel According to John (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1991).
3. Thompson, Marianne Meye, The God of the Gospel of John (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans,
2001).
