INTEGRATION OF FAITH AND LEARNING
Romans is a very practical book. The aim of this study has not been to give
merely a theoretical armchair understanding of the book but one that is practical
and living. John Stott’s commentary was chosen with this in mind. Throughout
the commentary Stott is concerned with the application of Paul’s teaching
to modern questions and concerns. The Study Questions at the back of Stott’s
commentary are particularly aimed in this direction. The student is repeatedly
asked questions such as: What implications does this have for you? How does
your experience match up to this? What can we learn from this? Can you give
examples from your own experience? Questions such as these will help the student
bridge the gap between the book of Romans and their own lives.
To determine if the course learning results have been attained, students document their learning by submitting the following items:
• Paper on Paul’s purpose in writing Romans.
• Paper on Paul’s theological terminology.
• Study Questions on the preliminary essay in Stott’s commentary.
• Study Questions on chapters 1-8 (Romans 1-4) in Stott’s commentary.
• Study Questions on chapters 9-11 (Romans 5-8) in Stott’s commentary.
• Study Questions on chapters 12-16 (Romans 9-11) in Stott’s commentary.
