COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an introduction to special education and is designed to ensure that students explore alternative ways of viewing, understanding, and teaching the exceptional child. Students will be introduced to various topics that will focus on legislation, regulations, inclusion, least restrictive environment, eligibility for special education services, and evaluation.

LEARNING RESULTS
The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
1. the relationship of special education to regular education
2. eligibility requirements for placement in a special education program
3. federal and state legislation and the effect it has had on public education
4. inclusion of special education students into the regular classroom
5. ethical conduct and responsibility for the welfare of special education students
6. instructional arrangements and techniques for exceptional children
7. parents' rights and responsibilities
8. various terms and definitions as they apply to special education

INTEGRATION OF FAITH AND LEARNING
Christian principles will be integrated through assigned learning experiences and dialogue with the student. Learning experiences designed to enhance or develop the attitude that all children can learn regardless of their disability will be based on Christian principles. Students must exhibit an attitude that emphasizes treating others as they would want to be treated, loving others as themselves, and having respect for others regardless of their disability. These attributes are necessary in the field of special education.

To determine if the course learning results have been attained, students document their learning by submitting the following items:
1. Submit specific assignments after reading required text

4. Complete exams as assigned
