HIS232E Early Christianity Through Medieval Times (3 credits) 9295
COURSE DESCRIPTION
A study of the beginning of the Christian movement and its contact with Judaism, paganism and Greek philosophy, the Roman empire and the Renaissance, including the great personalities, documents and developments of the church up to the Reformation. LEARNING RESULTS
The learner will be able to:
• Discuss the influence of pagan philosophy and Judaism on the formation of Christianity.
• Explain the process by which Christianity transformed the Roman empire and the Roman empire transformed Christianity
• Identify the significant contributions of church leaders and reformers.
• Outline conflicts within early Christianity.
• Trace the political and cultural role that Christianity played in Medieval Europe.
• Outline the importance of the Crusades in altering the history of Christianity.
• Compare the role Plato’s philosophy played in the intellectual foundations of early Christianity to that of Aristotle in the Renaissance and Reformation period.
• Compare and contrast the beliefs and practices of sixteenth century Anabaptists, Anglicans, Calvinists, and Lutherans.
• Integrate faith and learning through critical analysis of your own beliefs in relation to their historic development.
