August 2006 Archives

Part of the LCMS v3 Implementation Initiative involves moving Web sites and applications that are not in LCMS v2 into LCMS v3. This is important since the old Web server on which they exist is going to be completely unsupported as of January 1, 2007. There aren't many of these sites, but the ones that exist are pretty big.

As of this evening, I am happy to announce that one of the remaining "heavy hitters" has been migrated to LCMS v3: the Zondervan Library Web site.

Some tweaking and refining is still necessary, but the new site is in good enough condition to launch just in time for the start of the new school year.

TUFW Migration Update

|

Actual work on the migration of the TUFW Web site has begun! Phil completed the major template and design work this week, and I trained Tricia Halferty on how to begin site migration.

We still have a few look/feel tweaks to complete and more will show up as Tricia finishes more pages, but both projects are now fully engaged.

We resolve the majority of the issues with Sitestudio. Though problems remain, we were able to continue the migration process.

As a result, I am happy to announce that the migration of Athletics content is complete.

Best Laid Plans

|

What is it they say about best laid plans? Whatever it is, we were unable to finish athletics this week or make significant progress on training due to downtime with the server that runs LCMS v3.

On Tuesday afternoon, power was inadvertently removed from sitestudiosrv1 with out it being properly shutdown. As a result the Windows OS was corrupted. After hours of trying to resolve the problem, it was determined that the server needed to be rebuilt. We hope that this will be complete on Monday. We tried some interim solutions for contributing content, but success was fleeting.

These unplanned snags are what make it scary to predict a timeline for completion ... especially when it seems like this project has had several such delays.

On a positive note, I am happy to report that implementation of TUFW look/feel onto the templates has progressed, and we had our first review of the work today. We hope to have the majority of those templates ready for TUFW to begin their migration next Friday.

The bulk of the migration of the athletics department has been completed. All general content and all sports excepting men's and women's track have been completed. I will be using the two track sports for an internal training excercise with my team. At that point, athletics will be finished.

In addition to migrating the existing content, we also added some of the roster and schedules for the upcoming season in an effort to assist the Athletics department prepare for the new season.

With the completion of Athletics, our migration focus will be on the following:

  • Completing development of initial training materials in order to get current content contributors into the system to maintain their content as it is migrated
  • Applying the TUFW branding to the Web templates so the TUFW migration can begin
  • Preparing for the migration of Student Affairs and academic department content.
  • Working with Brainstorm to begin design of look/feel for the Web site that will include the University's new branding

Additionally, I've started to contemplate a timeline for completion. I hope to be able to share that within the next week.
